From SA Startup to Global Pet Tech Pioneer: MyBusiness App with Microsoft for Startups' Founders Hub
Luthando A. Vilakazi
Over the past three years, MyBusiness App – a South African tech startup – has defied the daunting odds facing new businesses. In an industry where roughly 90% of startups fail over time (explodingtopics.com) and fewer than half of African startups survive their early years (techpoint.africa), MyBusiness App’s growth is remarkable. The company proudly describes its flagship product as “the global pet care platform” for mobile and parlor groomers (mypetparlorapp.com), reflecting its ambition to serve customers worldwide. As the company marks its third anniversary (Feb 2025), its trajectory demonstrates how a clear vision, smart use of technology, and strong partnerships (especially with Microsoft for Startups' Founders Hub) and support from our technology providers can turn a local startup into an international innovator.
MyBusiness App is on a mission to become essential for influential businesses and brands by delivering transformative cloud solutions, services, and resources to help them be digital, future-proof, and customer-centric.
The journey began on the 9th of March, 2023, when MyBusiness App was first accepted into the Microsoft for Startups' Founders Hub. This pivotal moment was captured in a blog post titled "MyBusiness App moving forward with Microsoft for Startups' Founders Hub." The initial acceptance marked a crucial step for the South African software company as it embarked on its mission to provide technology-driven solutions for the pet care community, both locally and internationally.
From the start, MyBusiness App’s team leveraged the Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub to accelerate growth. This program provides startups with free access to development tools, cloud services, and expert support. For example, members receive generous Azure credits (up to $150,000 worth) and premium software subscriptions, such as Microsoft 365 seats and GitHub Enterprise licenses (learn.microsoft.com). In practice, MyBusiness App reports tapping into these resources immediately: within one day of joining Founders Hub, the team set up Microsoft 365 for collaboration and enabled GitHub Enterprise and Azure credits for our engineering efforts. The result was not only a productivity boost but also cost savings – the founders noted saving over R 50,000 ( on annual software subscriptions with recent savings having hit new highs. In addition to tools, Founders Hub connects startups with knowledge and networks. Microsoft emphasises that Founders Hub “eliminates traditional barriers” to innovation by providing free access to GitHub and the Microsoft Cloud and partnerships with AI leaders like OpenAI. MyBusiness App’s team took this to heart: they are using their Founders Hub benefits to integrate AI into the platform (an intention they announced early on and recently with our first AI agent released) and to seek expert guidance for scaling. In short, the program has furnished MyPetParlor App with cutting-edge technology (cloud, development tools, CRM and more) and the support needed to turn ambitious ideas into reality.
Since its acceptance into the Microsoft for Startups Founders Hub, MyBusiness App has made remarkable strides in enhancing its technology offering. The core of this advancement lies in the development of the MyPetParlor App itself, which has evolved into a comprehensive global pet care platform catering to both mobile and parlor groomers. A key aspect of this evolution has been the establishment of a robust, multi-tenant, multi-stamp global API platform, built on the scalable infrastructure of Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform.
Building on this foundation, MyPetParlor App has aggressively upgraded its technology. A major cloud migration in early April 2024 laid the groundwork for global expansion. The engineering team consolidated databases and redesigned the backend using Azure’s Deployment Stamps pattern, enabling multi-tenant support with shared cloud resources. Over a 38-day effort (Feb–Mar 2024), by consolidating our databases, they migrated to Azure and created a unified PostgreSQL database (replacing fragmented MongoDB instances), dramatically simplifying operations.
By late 2024, this architecture was extended to the public API, transforming the MyPetParlor App API to a global and scalable API. MyPetParlor App introduced a stamp-based, multi-tenant API design that lets each region run on its own “stamp” while reusing common infrastructure. In practice, this means the app can now easily spin up new instances and regional deployments without bottlenecks. According to the company’s October 2024 technical blog, this approach “enhances multi-tenant support, improves scalability, and enables regional deployments,” paving the way for new offerings like in-app e-commerce. In short, the platform is engineered to be globally scalable and efficient, a necessity for supporting businesses in multiple countries (and currencies).
Additionally, these back-end changes were matched by a modern, user-focused front end. In October 2024 the team rolled out a dual-theme dashboard (light/dark mode) and a reorganised interface that streamlines key functions (Bookings, Customers, Schedules, etc.). The company’s blog explains that these UI enhancements “boost scalability, enhance user experience, and offer providers a streamlined, personalised platform.” In practice, new pet care businesses can now be onboarded faster, and the interface is clean and intuitive for groomers on the job. The user-focused front end changes were then used to prepare for a new self-service sign up UI for new sign ups to use directly on our website.
By early November 2024, the MyPetParlor App officially released its self-service sign up to instantly onboard new customers and get them started in minutes. Previously, signing up for MyPetParlor App involved a multi-step process: filling out forms, exchanging emails, and coordinating with our sales and operations teams. While this hands-on approach served us well, we recognised the need for a faster, more efficient solution that gives you immediate access to the tools you need.
Behind the scenes, AI automation is now coming to the MyPetParlor App. With Microsoft as a close partner with access to cutting-edge AI technologies, knowledge, and expert networks, the team has been building an intelligent AI assistant (a chatbot) to guide users through the app and automate routine tasks. The team describes it as a Python/Chainlit-based assistant that uses multiple specialised agents – e.g. setup wizards, booking handlers, pet profile managers – and even a code-interpreter agent for data analysis.) While the technical details can be complex to understand, the impact is clear: simple questions (“How do I add a new customer?” or “Give me a report of this month’s revenue”) can be answered by the AI, saving time and supporting less-technical users. This AI focus aligns with our mission and positions MyBusiness App, though the MyPetParlor App, as a leader in AI-driven pet care.
MyPetParlor App’s innovations come at a time of rapid growth in the pet care technology market. Pet ownership is surging globally – NielsenIQ reports over 1 billion pets owned worldwide (56% of households in surveyed countries) (petfoodindustry.com) – and pet parents are increasingly spending on tech solutions for convenience and care. Market research firm Arizton (2025) forecasts the global pet tech market at roughly $9.3 billion in 2025, growing to ~$23.7 billion by 2032 (≈14.3% CAGR) (coherentmarketinsights.com). Similarly, ResearchAndMarkets projects $7.6 billion in 2024 expanding to $17.3 billion by 2030 (businesswire.com). These gains are driven by trends like pet “humanisation,” smart devices, and AI/IoT innovations (smart feeders, GPS trackers, health monitors, etc.) (businesswire.com). In other words, owners want more tech-enabled ways to care for their animals, and software tools like the MyPetParlor App are stepping in to meet that demand.
MyPetParlor App’s platform is built for this moment. Its multi-tenant, multi-currency, multi-region architecture lets groomers around the world manage bookings, payments and records using locally accepted methods. It offers both mobile (branded Android and iOS customer apps) and web portals, enabling pet businesses of all sizes (mobile groomers, parlor groomers, multi-team groomers) to digitalise operations. And with our goals to embed AI automation at the core of the product, it aligns with the market’s push toward data-driven, personalised pet care services. The result is a solution that not only cuts costs and saves time for small businesses, but also taps into the high-growth segments of the pet industry.
As MyBusiness App enters its fourth year, the team is optimistic about the future. The company’s leaders emphasise a long-term vision: to fully harness a modern ecosystem (Cloud, DevOps, AI partnerships, mentoring, etc.) and continuously evolve the product. Upcoming priorities include finishing the self-service onboarding features, expanding AI-driven processes and analytics, and launching any remaining capabilities (like add-ons, multilingual support, and the subscriptions & billing management) that the scalable architecture now supports. With the backing of the Founders Hub, MyBusiness App's team plan to add more “technology benefits” for customers and pursue mentors’ guidance.
In summary, MyBusiness App exemplifies how a bold startup from South Africa can become a global tech innovator. By leveraging Microsoft’s support and remaining relentlessly focused on customer needs, the company has built a robust, AI-augmented platform that stands out in the burgeoning pet care industry. The combination of cloud scalability, multi-tenant design, and cutting-edge AI tools means MyPetParlor App is well-positioned to lead the future of pet care technology – celebrating three years now, and looking toward many more of digital transformation and growth.
